Bush wants .5 Billion for training low-income couples to develop healthy marriages. The proposal is to have services available for training couples, mostly low-income, to communicate and promote healthier marriages, and to start an advertising campaign publicizing the benefits of marriage. Horn, the assistant secretary of health and human services for children and families, said: Marriage programs do work. Healthy marriages require the ability to communicate with each other, with both parents working; In a letter to the Editor of The New York Times, Jackie Smith wrote,To the Editor:Re Bush Plans .5 Billion Drive for Promotion of Marriage (front page, Jan. 14):President Bush plans to spend .5 billion to promote marriage by providing low-income couples with training in interpersonal relations. More families are strained by the pressures of having two wage earners working at least full time. And more workers need to work multiple jobs to make ends meet.Strong marriages require that workers have livable incomes, economic security and sufficient leisure time to build the strong interpersonal relationships that families require.JACKIE SMITHStony Brook, N.Y., Jan. 14, 2004The writer is an associate professor of sociology at SUNY Stony Brook. This issue is brining about some strong opinions across the nation. Should a child be raised by both parents in a loveless marriage or raised by a single parent that can show them love of self, independence and share parenting with the other parent. We need to not take funds from Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) and put into programs to promote marriage. (Bauchner)Promotion of the Healthy Marriage Proposal leads to the definition of marriage. … The same moral tradition that defines marriage also teaches that each individual has dignity and value in God’s sight” (Whitehouse.gov)From this definition, it would sound like Bush would define marriage between individuals that love and respect each other: individuals that could be two males, two females, and even one male and one female. Does the government have the right to define a marriage and take away the rights of individuals to choose whom they love and marry?

Back in January about Chris Thile’s album Not All Who Wander Are Lost and now concerning 26 Miles by Sean Watkins. Musically I like This Side better and of course the vocal variety is missing (remember I’m coming from the perspective of hearing the group together) although Sara Watkins does do some of the harmony vocals on the song Locking Doors. I think my votes for favorite songs go to: Letters Never Sent Hiding 26 Miles And virtually all the rest!

But his humanity was not sinful or offensive to God.I am concerned that we, as the Church, have created an atmosphere that doesn’t allow for human weakness or failure. Have we created a place where, unless one expresses superhuman joy and faith all the time, we look down upon and condemn others as less holy or a failure in their faith walk?We must remember that God, in His infinite wisdom, made us human. That combination of humanity and Spirit is what gives us both the humanity to fail and the faith to overcome; Be that royal priest called by God to show acceptance…not rejection.May God richly bless you this day and may you experience the wonderful overcoming power of the Holy Spirit as you seek to be like God.CLG-B* I Peter 2:9-10 “But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.”

Journal of Sleep Research Volume 12 Issue 2 Page 95 - June 2003 doi:10.1046/j.1365-2869.2003.00341.x Daytime sleepiness during Ramadan intermittent fasting: polysomnographic and quantitative waking EEG study Rachida Roky 1 , Florian Chapotot 2 , Majda Taoudi Benchekroun 1 , Brahim Benaji 1 , Farid Hakkou 1 , Hassan Elkhalifi 1 and Alain Buguet 2,3 Abstract During the lunar month of Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating, drinking and smoking from sunrise to sunset. We reported previously that Ramadan provokes a shortening in nocturnal total sleep time by 40 min, an increase in sleep latency, and a decrease in slow-wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep duration during Ramadan. During the same study, the effects of Ramadan intermittent fasting on daytime sleepiness were also investigated in eight healthy young male subjects using a quantitative waking electroencephalograph (EEG) analysis following the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) procedure. This procedure was combined with subjective alertness and mood ratings and was conducted during four successive experimental sessions: (1) baseline (BL) 15 days before Ramadan, (2) beginning of Ramadan (R11) on the 11th day of Ramadan, (3) end of Ramadan (R25) on the 25th day of Ramadan, (4) recovery 2 weeks after Ramadan (AR). During the MSLT, mean sleep latency decreased by an average of 2 min in R11 (especially at 10:00 and 16:00 h) and 6 min in R25 (especially at 10:00 and 12:00 h) compared with BL. Significant correlations were found between sleep latency during the MSLT and the waking EEG absolute power of the fast alpha (10.5-12.5 Hz), sigma (11.5-15.5 Hz) and beta (12.5-30 Hz) frequency bands. The delay in sleep onset has been rendered responsible for a shift towards the evening chronotype in Muslims observing Ramadan (Roky et al. In a previous study, our team confirmed that Ramadan fasting is accompanied by impairment in alertness, assessed by visual analogue scales (VAS), at 09:00 and 16:00 h without any change in psychomotor performance estimated from movement reaction time and critical frequency fusion tests (Roky et al. Therefore, we used an objective measure of excessive daytime sleepiness, the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT), a test widely used to study the effects of sleep deprivation (Bonnet and Arand 1995; Other parameters such as wake efficiency (100 minus percentage of sleep) and sleep onset frequency (number of sleep onsets within the series of nap opportunities), were also analysed (Clodoréet al. Sleepiness is also reflected in the waking EEG, as shown by sleep deprivation during which an increase in several EEG frequency bands occurs (delta, alpha, theta, beta) (Aeschbach et al. After medical and biological screening, healthy subjects were selected on their regular schedules regarding meal (breakfast at 07:00 ± 1 h, lunch at 12:00 ± 1 h and dinner at 20:00 ± 1 h) and sleep (sleep between 23:00 and 07:00 ± 1 h). The subjects underwent four continuous 24-h PSG recording sessions: (1) baseline 12 days before Ramadan (BL), (2) beginning of Ramadan on the 11th day of Ramadan (R11), (3) end of Ramadan on the 25th day of Ramadan (R25), (4) and 2 weeks after Ramadan (AR). During non-fasting days (BL, AR), meals were scheduled as follows: breakfast at 08:00 h, lunch at 12:30 h, light snack at 17:00 h and dinner at 20:30 h. Meals schedule was: break of fasting at 18:00 h at the beginning of Ramadan and 18:30 h at the end of Ramadan, light snack at 21:00 h, and dinner at 22:30 h. Nocturnal and MSLT PSG recordings were visually scored in 20-s epochs following classical criteria for wakefulness, stages 1, 2, 3 and 4 of non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM sleep, stages 3 and 4 constituting SWS), and REM sleep (Rechtschaffen and Kales 1968). Sleep onset was defined by the beginning of three consecutive 20-s epochs of stage 1 or at least one epoch of any other deeper sleep stage. Results Nocturnal sleep The effect of Ramadan on nocturnal sleep was detailed in a previous paper (Roky et al. Briefly, total sleep time decreased (418 ± 12 versus 362 ± 26 min) and sleep latency increased (27.7 ± 9 versus 85.1 ± 29 min) at the end of Ramadan. The proportion of NREM sleep increased during Ramadan and its structure changed, with an increased duration in stage 2 and a decrease in SWS. Daytime sleepiness, mood, diurnal waking EEG activity and rectal temperature MSLT scores Sleep onset frequency (Fig. 1) was not changed during Ramadan in comparison with BL, but was higher in R25 compared with AR (t = 75, P = 0.004). 1) varied between sessions ( 2 = 12.3, P = 0.007), with a decrease at the end of Ramadan (R25; Time-of-day effects were observed in the non-fasting condition (BL and AR), sleep latency being shorter at 14:00 h than at 10:00 h (t = 0, P = 0.027 in BL; t = 0, P = 0.018 in AR) and 16:00 h (t = 2, P = 0.042 in BL and t = 0, P = 0.042 in AR). During Ramadan, the decrease in sleep latency was more important at 10:00 h (t = 3.04, P = 0.018) and at 12:00 h (t = 5.2, P = 0.0012). 1) decreased ( 2 = 12.6, P = 0.006) during Ramadan, especially in R25 (83% in BL, 75% in R11, 61% in R25 and 78% in AR). In Ramadan condition, the decrease in wake duration was larger at 10:00 h (t = 0, P = 0.011) and 12:00 h (t = 3, P = 0.02) than at 16:00 h (F = 2.2, P = 0.03). 1) did not change from BL to Ramadan, but it was longer in R11 and R25 in comparison with AR (t = 66, P = 0.028; This was not true during Ramadan, as subjective alertness decreased only at 12:00 h in R11 (t = 4, P = 0.049) and increased at 14:00 h (t = 2.5, P = 0.029) in R25. It was greater at 12:00 h in Ramadan than in AR (t = 2, P = 0.025 in R11 and t = 6, P = 0.05 in R25). After Ramadan, mood resumed BL values at 10:00, 14:00 and 16:00 h but was low at 12:00 h (t = 2, P = 0.025). Diurnal waking EEG activity During the waking epochs of the daytime naps, the EEG absolute powers in the delta (0.5-5.5 Hz), alpha (8.5-12.5 Hz), sigma (11.5-15.5 Hz), beta (12.5-30 Hz) frequency bands, as well as the overall absolute power (0.5-30 Hz), were not affected by Ramadan. In contrast, the waking EEG activity in the theta (5.5-8.5 Hz) frequency band increased during Ramadan fasting as compared with BL (t = 3.24, P = 0.006). In addition, positive correlations were found between the MSLT measures of sleep latency and the waking EEG absolute power in the fast alpha (10.5-12.5 Hz) (r = 0.25, P = 0.02), beta (r = 0.27, P = 0.02) and sigma (r = 0.29, P = 0.01) frequency bands (Table 1). Rectal temperature and correlations with sleepiness measures Rectal temperature decreased during Ramadan (R11: t = 68, P = 0.015; Rectal temperature correlated best with sleep latency (r = 0.35, P = 0.0002). Higher rectal temperature corresponded to a larger delay in sleep onset and to a longer wake duration prior to sleep during the nap episodes (Table 2). Discussion Go to: This study showed an increase in daytime sleepiness, especially at 10:00 and 12:00 h at the end of Ramadan, and a decrease in daytime body temperature during Ramadan. The MSLT measures of sleep latency and the duration of wake and stage 1 during naps varied in the same way during Ramadan. Although wake efficiency has been thought to represent the best parameter to appreciate daytime sleepiness from MSLT data (Pollak 1997), the percentage of wake and sleep latency gave a similar estimate of sleepiness. In our protocol, however, the positive correlation between the fast alpha activity (10.5-12.5 Hz) and sleep latency during Ramadan demonstrated that this activity decreases when sleepiness increases, at least when subjects are recorded with the eyes closed. Repeated partial sleep deprivation progressively changes the EEG during sleep and wakefulness.

Sleep and Biological Rhythms Volume 2 Issue 2 Page 135 - June 2004 doi:10.1111/j.1479-8425.2004.00135.x Effect of fasting during Ramadan on sleep architecture, daytime sleepiness and sleep pattern Ahmed BAHAMMAM Abstract Fasting during Ramadan is distinct from regular voluntary or experimental fasting. This project was conducted to objectively assess the effect of Ramadan fasting on sleep architecture, daytime sleepiness and the circadian cycle of melatonin level. Eight healthy volunteers reported to the Sleep Disorders Center on four occasions for polysomnography and multiple sleep latency tests: 1) an initial visit for adaptation; Sleep latency at night was significantly shorter and the amount of rapid eye movement sleep was significantly less, at R3 compared to BL. This study showed a significant reduction in sleep latency and rapid eye movement sleep during the third week of Ramadan fasting. Otherwise, there was no significant effect of Ramadan on sleep architecture and assessment revealed no increase in daytime sleepiness. In a previous work using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) with a group of medical students, we found a significant increase in daytime sleepiness during Ramadan even though the participants’ total sleep time during Ramadan did not differ from baseline. reported increased objective daytime sleepiness during Ramadan fasting using the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) associated with decreased total sleep time (TST), increased sleep latency and changes in diurnal body temperature. Therefore the participants did not sleep long enough to progress to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which made comparison of sleep stages between naps before and during Ramadan less accurate. Therefore, the present project was designed to examine the effect of Islamic fasting on sleep architecture, daytime sleepiness and the circadian pattern of melatonin level by using polysomnography (PSG) and the MSLT, along with other laboratory and subjective measures, during the first and third weeks of Ramadan (R1 and R3). In contrast to Rocky’s papers, the dinner meal in the present study was given 3 h before bedtime to control the possible effect of late meals on nocturnal sleep and circadian rhythm. Study protocol Participants were asked to complete a daily sleep diary when not in the Sleep Disorders Center (SDC).

A city can unilaterally (if the state legislature agrees) incorporate any towns adjacent to it, but cannot incorporate an adjacent city without a reciprocal agreement. Therefore, New York City is completely surrounded by technical cities, some of them quite small. Here’s a few: Dutch anchor ‘a useless object (archaic)’, Dutch uncle ’someone who talks to you patronizingly’, Dutch treat ‘each pays for himself, thus not a treat at all’, Dutch auction ‘the price is lowered until someone bids’, if that’s so I’m a Dutchman ‘[emphatic negation]‘, Dutch courage ‘courage induced by alcohol’, double Dutch ‘jargon’. Average precipitation days per year is only 132, certainly far from rain-forest conditions, but still involving plenty of rain (660 mm per year) and snow (1524 mm per year). People typically asked for numbers by city and local number, or even city and subscriber name, and she set up the trunk connection.

Vroom’s 1964 classic, Work and Motivation, has been pointed to as a model for how the expectations that individuals have of their workplace, their coworkers, and their employer, can deeply influence motivation. In the second edition of Work and Motivation, Vroom writes that “the choices made by person among alternative courses of action are lawfully related to psychological events occurring contemporaneously within the behavior” Vroom goes on to articulate his “expectancy theory”: “The force motivating a person to exert effort or to perform an act in a job situation depends on the interaction between what the individual wants from a job (valence) and the degree to which he/she believes that the company will reward effort exerted (expectancy) on that job with the things he/she wants. Individuals believe that if they behave in a certain way (instrumentality), they will receive certain job features (Vroom 1982).” According to Litwin and Stringer (1966), leadership style is critical in managing expectations and one of the most important determinants of psychological climate. In 1988, researchers Good and Sisler conducted a study of individuals in retailing to determine the components of psychological climate. Here are the resulting categories: Role clarity Role harmony Job autonomy Job variety and challenge Job importance Role assignment When Kelsen heard the description of psychological climate, she gave a wry smile. #2—Role Harmony: Employee receives information about what is expected of him or her in the execution of the job, and it is compatible with job expectations; and later, when detailing the behaviors involved in the performance of the job, expected behaviors are consistent with the employee’s understanding of the job. Risk-taking is encouraged, and if an idea does not work, team members are encouraged to explore how their expectations were different than the outcome, and how lessons learned can help salvage or repurpose the results. #5—Leader Goal Emphasis and Work Facilitation: The supervisor encourages and stimulates individuals to become personally involved in meeting group goals by stressing high performance standards, creating an atmosphere that rewards high performance, and then participating in the work himself or herself, therefore setting an example. #6—Job Challenge and Variety: Individuals are encouraged to use their skills and abilities on the job, and their initiative is rewarded as they engage in a wide range of behaviors on the job in order to meet objectives. In conclusion, the idea of psychological climate can be a breakthrough strategy for online learning organizations suffering from low morale, high turnover, loss of coordination, communication and teamwork problems, despite experiencing huge growth and financial success. individual differences in autonomous orientation independently predicted the degree to which the workers were able to satisfy their needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness on the job, which in turn predicted the workers’ (1977) “Relationship between psychological climate and a VIE model for work motivation” (1979) “Psychological climate: dimensions and relationships of individual and aggregated work environment perceptions,” (1985) “The relationships between job attitudes, personal characteristics, and job outcomes: a study of retail store managers,” (1994) “The relationship between psychological climate and work motivation in a retail environment”

From the New York Times, June 17: Forty-two percent of the people responding to the poll said they approved of the way Mr. Bush was handling his job, a marked decline from his 51 percent rating after of the November election…I have a fantasy that one day Bush ducks into a phone booth, whips off his republican suit and in some fine superhero garb declares: This was all a nightmare lesson on what can happen when people arent paying attention.

It replaced the Sikes system of measuring the proof of strength of spirits, which had been used in Britain for over 160 years. Proof spirit meant that the whisky at a temperature of 51 Fahrenheit weighed exactly twelve-thirteenths of a volume of distilled water equal to the volume of the whisky. But how does US proof strength compare with European (and British) strengths? Some US proofs and their European equivalents are:100 Proof = 50% Alc.

Sporadic postings only till I get back to Israel on March 22…Kinda difficult to write a Jerusalem blog when I’m roaming around the U.S (Yes, I know many American Jews have no problem pontificating about Israel while they sit in Poughkeepsie, Cleveland or Berkeley, but I’ll leave that up to them…)Meantime, for your Purim enjoyment:Some of the best Jewish people watching in the world is available for just a few shekel on a Jerusalem bus. This is nowhere more in evidence than on Shushan Purim, the holiday observed by residents of walled cities, a day after the rest of the world has returned to normal after the raucous Purim festival. Busloads of Haredim from B’nei B’rak descend on Jerusalem just so they can celebrate the holiday all over again…It’s difficult to forget Purim 2000 when Shushan Purim coincided with the first day of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Israel. Israeli authorities wisely decided that the pontiff would be better off with Yasser Arafat on that day, so they packed him off to Bethlehem to avoid having to explain why there were so many little costumed popes and nuns running round the city. After a swift Purim festive meal, I headed off to the press center to watch the live TV feed of the pope from Bethlehem. As I hopped on the bus, I noticed that the shops in my neighborhood were already closed, the owners home enjoying their Purim seuda. I’d brought along a newspaper to pass the time, but the street was far more entertaining than any paper.Down on Jabotinsky Street, kids in costume were bustling in and out of apartments delivering baskets of mishloach manot–gifts of prepared foodstuffs–to friends and neighbors. Most were unaccompanied by adults–children as young as six or seven years old ride the bus alone here and walk around the neighborhood unafraid. On Jaffa Road a group of bewildered Christian tourists from Indiana got onto the bus and asked why everything was closed and why were people running around in costume–wasn’t Purim yesterday, they wondered. The bus climbed up Strauss St. headed for Geula, a continuation of the ultra-orthodox Meah Shearim area. Music blasted through the windows as we approached Kikar Shabbat, the main intersection–where the Haredim post community pronouncements. Today, the posters announce that the Pope is the worldly representation of the cross that caused Jews so much grief over the centuries. But most people in the streets were far too busy enjoying the one day of the year when they could act out with the sanction of the rabbis. Some men had exchanged their somber black hats for bright red, tasseled Turkish-style fez’s. Others wore cowboy hats, their long sideburns mingling incongruously with the strings of their foreign headgear. The women apparently had been too busy making sure their offspring were adequately decked out to bother with their own costumes. Most wore regular Shabbat clothes. But the kids who clogged the sidewalk and spilled out onto the narrow street causing massive traffic jams, were happily trying out their new identities. Little Rabbi Ovadya Yosefs were running around everywhere, chased by a few Yasser Arafats and some more traditional Mordechai characters.Everyone was hauling mishloach manot baskets. Some parents took their kids over to deposit a basket with the beggars on the street who were standing back to watch the action. While we sat in gridlock, a young man in costume at the front of the bus suddenly opened the window and yelled out to a pedestrian walking by with an upturned hat: Is that for matanot llink

Where do you go to bid on a ,500 French lampshade, two 0,000 Bijar rugs, and a 2,000 erte statue that was once owned by a Vietnam war flying ace and former United States Congressman?Unfortunately, the answer is: a Treasury Department auction. As a self-proclaimed born-again Christian, former representative Randy Duke Cunningham is yet another example of why the Christian right is simply wrong, only this time it was proven in court.

Those powerful hymns and songs of praise that speak so ably of His terrific suffering and pain on our behalf help bring to light how greatly He loves us.As I was reading Oswald Chambers’ My Utmost for His Highest this morning, he had quite a lot to say about being crucified with Christ. What our Lord wants us to present to Him is not goodness, nor honesty, nor endeavor, but real solid sin; But we must relinquish all pretense of being anything, all claim of being worthy of God’s consideration. If you are up against the question of relinquishing, go through the crisis, relinquish all, and God will make you fit for all that He requires of you.Often we are tempted to keep areas of our life in tact apart from God’s intervention.

The case against soundbite evangelismThe question: Pretend that I have never heard about this Jesus before, and you have 30 seconds to give me all the information I need to be saved. What information are you going to give me? Will you have enough time to make sure the information is correct and complete? Here were some of the answers:Romans 3:23 / 5:8 / 10:9 - something like that I might use 1 Cor 15:1-4. (this was mine).Romans 1:20 Come on now. I’m suprised at you guys.My actual favorite verse even if I have more than 30 seconds is Isaiah 53:6. No one is exempt from doing his own thing, at least at some point in their lives, and so this verse points them to the need for redemption, and Christ as the answer. And finally…I believe I could do it in less than 30 seconds easily: God clearly states you

Sermon: Christchurch, Leyton, Sunday 30th July 2006Two Ways to Live: 2. The Fall and Sin.Roms 3:10-12. As it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.Mk 7:20-22. He went on: What comes out of a man is what makes him ‘unclean.’ For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.IntroductionTo addres the question of the Fall and sin is simply to ask the question: Are we normal or abnormal? Is the world we live in normal or abnormal? That is to ask: Are sickness, pain, death, evil, sin etc, all normal or are they abnormal?1. Without the God of the Bible all of this is normal – we are stuck with them. Any hope or relief must come from man or the UN, or some human invention. All of these are part of the way things have always been and always will be, world without end, amen! But it gets worse, for if everything spun out of a chance collision of atoms billions of years ago, without purpose or Creator, then this is just the way things are, and, worse still, it does not mean a thing.Tthis helps us with a question we hear pretty frequently: if there is a God, how come there is so much evil, death, suffering, sickness and pain in the world? The Christian answer is that without God there is no basis for the feelings of greif, sorrow or sympathy for humen sufferers. In other words, there is no reason for getting worked up about it! Your see in a random world of evolution and chance – how can pain, suffering or loss have any real meaning or significance? If the world sprang form a chance collison of atoms, then so did we, and so did our whole experience, and our life to. If the beginning had no meaning or purpose then neither can the middle or the end. All that’s left is Oxford’s Richard Dawkin’s blind pitiless indifference.2.On the other hand, according to the Bible, all of these are abnormal because of man’s fall and rebellion in Adam and Eve. But, there is hope because the same God who declares us lost and without hope, has begun a comprehensive plan of restoration…. for the whole creation.1.Look at the extent of the problem: Roms 3:10-12. As it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one

-ne It’s trauma season! Because, while we do amazing work, being a patient at a busy trauma center sucks. Don’t stick your arm out the car window when driving at high speeds, because that bit your mom told you are losing an arm? Motorcycles are bread and butter for trauma centers. Even if you are super careful, wear your helmet (organ donors), don’t get drunk or high before riding them (see above) or race them at 160 mph (seriously, you’re 53 years old, if you don’t have common sense by now, it just isn’t happening), motorcycles are still risky. One night I had 4 patients, all injured in motorcycle accidents. So the nurse part of me wants to say avoid motorcycles. In high school my dream was to turn 16, get my motorcycle license, and walk down the halls of my prep school every morning, resplendent in leathers, carrying my helmet under my arm. Of course that idea was promptly squashed the same moment that I broached it, but that hasn’t kept me from occasionally and tentatively investigating motorcycle ownership (and that scream you just heard? I flip through my dad’s magazines when I am at home, and recently the FF and I looked up motorcycle safety classes in the area. But still, despite the trauma potential, I still have a motorcycle yen.

It is a significant cultural shift from three decades ago, when men almost invariably went back into the work force after losing a job and were more often able to find a new one that met their needs.“Men don’t feel a need to be in a career, not as much as they once did,” said Ruth Milkman, a sociologist at the University of California at Los Angeles. But when that ended, he could not find a job that, in his view, was neither demeaning nor underpaid. So instead of heading to work, Mr. Beggerow, now 53, fills his days with diversions: playing the piano, reading histories and biographies, masturbating, and writing unpublished Western potboilers in the Louis L’Amour style — all activities once relegated to spare time. Truly, not wanting a job and not working at all has nothing to do with being a lazy, disgraceful, self-absorbed waste, but rather it is a product of the pernicious capitalist system that strips people of thier feelings of adeqacy and forces them to work in a state of quasi-slavery.You can read the rest of this article on our parent site, The New York Times.

. . . He was the primary author of the 1966 Equality of Educational Opportunity study for the U.S. government -- I've never seen another social science study of that magnitude (several hundred pages analyzing the performance of several hundred thousand students in thousands of schools). Coleman explains why on pages 166-67 of his book Equality and Achievement in Education: For many who were not sympathetic to the extensive school reorganization that a desegregation plan entailed, the report was seen as a revelation that the emperor had no clothes, as a statistical analysis documenting what ordinary persons had known all along: that busing did not work. Because a person who had been seen to be at the forefront of the social movement – the person who, as author of the “Coleman Report,” was seen by some as the “father of busing” – made the revelation, it was even more powerful. One can understand the outrage with which many advocates of massive desegregation plans (including the then-president of the American Sociological Association, who proposed to have me censured by the association) greeted the report by recognizing the heterogeneous nature of the coalition on which the social movement depended. In the 1980s, Coleman and several co-authors wrote a couple of books showing that Catholic schools were superior to public schools – in terms of academic results, civic education, and improving the education of racial minorities. Coleman, “Response to the Sociology of Education Award,” Academic Questions (Summer 1989): 76-78.I ask you to recall the extraordinarily strong pro-public school consensus [within the academic community], the consensus that private schools were inegalitarian, and that Catholic schools were both ineffective and inegalitarian. It was not accidental that the first research that dared to claim that private schools, and even (as it turned out, especially) Catholic schools produced higher achievement for strictly comparable students, was done by someone whose reputation was secure. How can the discipline . One of the relatively early books proposing school vouchers was Politics, Markets, and America’s Schools, published by Brookings and written by John Chubb and Terry Moe in 1990.

Array Apparently, on the second planet from the sun it rains every day of the year but one, hence the misleading lyric of the title. On our canoe trip it did not rain every day. Rain drops stopped falling on our heads the sixth day, and later the eighth through eleventh days. In the end though, all the rain likely made the trip more memorable, heightening the challenge of the journey and our sense of accomplishment at its close. The goal was to paddle the Snake River from Duo Lakes, near the river’s headwaters, through its confluence with the Peel River, to Fort McPherson in ten days. In one of those Canada–is–small– and–the–number–of–people–who–pay–to–be–dropped–off–in– the–middle-of–nowhere–is–even–smaller moments, it turns out that the large group are with a family of outfitters from Ontario who happen to be related to a friend from home. After portaging the canoe to the river, we head back to the lakes with the intention of hiking up a nearby ridge. Nonetheless seeing our moment, we hit the water. The current is fast, and all the rain means this normally shallow section of the river is nothing but easy swifts and Class Is until we hit the river’s first canyon, which has mostly Class II sections, a Class III in their midst. Shortly after leaving the canyon, the rain returns and eventually suffering from the cold, we pull ashore, have an equally cold dinner, and make camp.DAY 3Another day of rain greets us. The river is wide enough that we can avoid them, but only with some stern paddling. After a handful of hours in the canoe we get to the second canyon. While the rain comes back for a time, we finish the day paddling in welcome sunshine, profoundly tired. DAY 5In recounting anecdotes from the trip, Martin would later refer to this day as ‘Black Tuesday’, though I would argue that it was decidedly more of a grey day, comprising weather and incidents that were alternatively dark and sunny. The morning is overcast but innocuous. Around a slight but heavily treed bend, we notice too late that the river, whose current is already speedy, now narrows rapidly, creating five–foot standing waves that span the river. Feeling rather delirious, we line down the rest of the narrows, and when the river broadens once more, we eat, set up the tent, and sleep.DAY 6We wake up still feeling a little wary about what the river might hold. Now, at a broad spit of sand known as the Taco Bar, we witness the avian equivalent of Godzilla versus King Kong, as a bald eagle tries to get at the nest of an enormous (though still smaller than the eagle) glaucous gull—a rippin’ good fight ensues.Stopping at the end of a long day, we have finished the first 300 kilometres of our trip in seven days of paddling, five of which were in the rain. Fortunately, we have no idea of the distance and our trip report, later discovered to be horrendously inaccurate, says the section should only take two days.I had hoped to see an azure darner on this trip, but succeeded in catching exclusively lake darners, like this female here.Labrador tea really does make a good cuppa.DAY 9The Peel River has a decidedly different character than the Snake. However, due to the rain, the current is not as slow as we had feared, allowing us to take breaks in certain sections and simply let our canoe float along with the river. (Having the day re–atomized into minutes and seconds after nine days without it is disconcerting.) Our aim is to paddle until we reached 8 Mile, where the Dempster Highway crosses the Peel by ferry and where we will catch a ride back to Inuvik. We see our first fish camp fairly early on, but also suffer from a headwind that gathers strength as the day progresses. Pulling ashore, we get out our lines and begin hauling the canoe down the river until a curve puts us in a lee and we can paddle again. Later, the river changes course and we spend the rest of the day with a crosswind, or occasional tailwind.Sometime in the evening, we pass a monument marking where an RCMP patrol perished trying to get back to McPherson.

Now about the topic of Patchguard, Kernel patching & co.:

Even though Steve implies the contrary, there are many documented functions to create firewalls (TDI drivers, NDIS drivers, Filter Hook drivers and the Windows Filtering platform which again is just an evolutionary step, not a revolutionary one as Steve implies and you certainly don’t have to wait for Vista to write a driver which uses well documented standardized APIs) and AV products (by using File System Filters and Registry Filters). So here goes my version:

In programming there are certain linkage points between components which are written by different groups (think different companies here, like Microsoft and other companies who produce software that runs on Windows). This can have multiple causes: (a) the developer doesn’t know about all the available APIs (ignorance) (b) the developer is trying to do something that breaks some assumption the system is built on or (c) there is truly no API for this. In this situation the developer might reverse-engineer the system s/he is developing against and try to modify (patch it) such a way that s/he is able to accomplish her/his goal. The are many, many problems with this approach: (a) it reduces system stability - there are many steps one must take to create a reliable patch and if one is missed, the stability of the system is in danger.
