-ne Over the past couple of weeks I’ve sold most of my underperforming positions. A further warning sign that I consider to be particularly important is the (nasdaq summation index) breaking support on the daily and weekly chart. So this week, I’ll proceed with extreme caution. I won’t be shorting anything yet because the stocks I’m still long of are all still in aggressive uptrends, and the overall market trend on weekly charts is still up.

Flirty Something: The Match-Makers

Array-ne Middle Fork Feather – Bald Rock Canyon V-V (P) “Bald Rock Canyon is one of the most spectacular canyons in California.” This bold statement is the first sentence about Bald Rock Canyon in The Best Whitewater in California. Yet for some reason Bald Rock has always been passed up for other runs in the area, but with a skimpy 37% snowpack in the north Sierras, Bald Rock was the only epic run flowing in California on a beautiful April Monday.Looking upstream from Milsap Bar in Feather River country, a beautiful, rugged area with profuse amounts of poison oak. Take-out options aren’t great for Bald Rock, one requires a 10 mile paddle out to Bidwell Bar Bridge, the second is a three mile paddle out followed by a very steep half mile scramble to a road, then a mile of hiking on a road with a slight incline. The current owners are not friendly towards boaters, but are also rarely there so we risked it.Milsap bar is a kayaking epicenter, serving as the put-in for Bald Rock, take-out for Devil’s Canyon of the Middle Fork, Little North Fork Feather and South Branch Feather. Paddling across I found it wasn’t too bad, granted you are riding a thin line between the 10’ ledge in front of you and sieve mess behind, but all the same if you are capable of doing Bald Rock you won’t find it too hard. Kurt and I relaxed, ate lunch and wandered around checking out the scenery after getting our boats to the end of the portage.Big rocks are all over Atom Bomb.Looking downstream from the resting spot. This is looking back upstream at the final of three drops that compose Atom Bomb Falls, and if you are thinking about it, these are the clean ones. Here is Kurt Sable demonstrating the ideal line on Curtain Falls in Bald Rock Canyon. The move was punching a lateral and moving left across a jet of water that pushed to the right, sliding a rock shelf on the left and avoiding an interesting looking hole, finally landing in an eddy and scouting the second half of a rapid. I surfed my way out and started driving left to get onto the shallow rock slide, barely got on the right edge of it and slowly slide down it and because of the right slope, back over to the right at the bottom of the rock ledge and into the funky hole. Dropping left over a four foot ledge I hoped to see a nice ramp to get past the hole, but instead found a ledge hole which instantly rear endered me back into the massive hole. More large horizon lines continued for the next mile with one more portaged mixed in, until eventually we could look back upstream and see Bald Rock Dome, and the rapids eased to IV and easy Vs again. I thought Bald Rock was very comparable to Golden Gate in hardness, although Bald Rock seemed to have more large holes and sieves, Golden Gate seemed a bit more continuous in overall character. It may not have the highest gradient out there, but Bald Rock makes the most of it with its pool drop nature, you can’t see the bottom of the majority of rapids. For a little tidbit of history, Bald Rock Canyon is the only reason the Middle Feather is still wild and scenic.

-ne by James Edgar, FIBA websiteThe Golden State Warriors are still hoping for a place in the play-offs in the Western Conference following an emphatic 111-82 win over the Dallas Mavericks.Table leaders Dallas rested a number of stars, including Germany star Dirk Nowitzki, Josh Howard and Jerry Stackhouse, and the Warriors capitalised on the presence of Dallas reserves Jose Juan Barea, Maurice Ager, Greg Buckner, DeSagana Diop and Devean George.Golden State jumped out to an early lead, outscoring the Mavericks 30-15 in the first quarter and never looked back.Mickael Pietrus led the scoring for Golden State with 22 points, with Matt Barnes taking 19 and 12 rebounds and Jason Richardson collecting 14 points and seven rebounds.Pietrus shot six-of-nine from the field, including three-of-four from the arc, and Barnes was seven-of-15 from the floor for the Warriors, who led by as many as 28 points in the third period.Ager scored 20 points and Barea added 13 and a career-high 10 rebounds for the Mavericks, who will face either the Warriors or Los Angeles Clippers in a first-round playoff series. The battle for the eighth and final play-off spot will come down to the last night of the season, when the Warriors take on Portland and the Clippers host New Orleans on Wednesday. The Clippers posted a critical 103-99 victory over Phoenix Suns to keep their play-off dreams alive.Elton Brand collected 21 points and nine rebounds and Tim Thomas added 18 and eight.Quinton Ross made two free throws and Jason Hart scored on a floater in the lane as Los Angeles grabbed a 97-92 lead at the 2:11 mark in the fourth quarter.Brazilian Leandro Barbosa netted five straight points for the Suns to close within 99-97 with 32 seconds left, but Hart sank all four of his free throws in the waning seconds to seal the victory.Raja Bell and Boris Diaw each scored 17 points and All-Star Amare Stoudemire chipped in 16 for Phoenix. The Clippers now need to beat the New Orleans Hornets and hope the Warriors stumble at Portland to secure thier second straight play-off berth for the first time since 1992 and 1993.The Cleveland Cavaliers won their third straight game with a 98-92 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.Larry Hughes scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half, LeBron James added 18 and Lithuanian Zydrunas Ilgauskas collected 14 points and eight rebounds for Cleveland. The Cavaliers now must emerge victorious from their final game against Milwaukee on Wednesday and hope Chicago lose at New Jersey to earn the second seed in the Eastern Conference.Orlando Magic posted a 95-84 victory over the Washington Wizards.

People are just getting to know who Nancy Pelosi is. But as they get to know who she is and that she’s standing up to Bush, they’re looking her more and more postively. According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corp Poll her favorables (among those who recognized her name– which in itself has risen from 64% in November to 75% last week) climbed to 45% from 41%. Bush Regime smear tactics have also driven up her unfavorable ratings.Meanwhile Bush’s own ratings are in a virtual free fall. He is more despised by the day. More Americans disapprove of President Bushs stewardship of the country than they did in March… Last month, Bushs disapproval rating was at 56 percent, but it has climbed to 62 percent, while his approval rating dropped from 37 percent to 36 percent. The last time the majority of people approved of the way the president was handling his job was in March 2005. The president has been without majority approval for over two years,” CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider said. “Thats longer than any president since Harry Truman.”Republican fortunes are falling even among the partys base– those taught to never even try to think on their own, the evangelicals. Yesterdays Washington Times, the Moonie paper, says the evangelicals absolutely hate the current crop of pathetic candidates the GOP is offering for the presidency. Youve got Dobson telling his sheep, I would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances, while he and Falwell– I couldn’t support him for president– both slam Giuliani. And virtually all evangelicals see Romney as a member of a dangerous non-Christian cult. Richard Land, president of the Religious and Ethics Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, takes a hard line against virtually all the major Republican candidates. He says he’d vote for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, New York Democrat, over Mr. Giuliani if the 2008 presidential race came down to such a choice. Land says he doesnt trust McCain either.Among multimillionaires who have thrived under Bushs tax system and profited from the way his regime has restructured the economy, there is still a great deal of loyalty and is remains a force to be reckoned with when it comes to extracting political contributions. Although it can be a double-edged sword– as Kentucky closet queen Mitch McConnell found out when Bush came to Louisville to solicit donations from the citys wealthy elite– Republican candidates are still clamoring for Bush to come to their districts to raise money for them… a long as they dont have to be in pictures with him.But as Bush and congressional leaders head towards a showdown tomorrow– and with Cheney squawking about the Democrats backing down– most Americans would rather trust Congress than the failed Bush Regime to set the course. Todays Washington Post claims only a third of Americans think Bush should be allowed to determine Iraq policy.Democrats appear to be standing on firm political ground, as they work toward a final bill. A Washington Post-ABC News poll of 1,141 adults, conducted April 12-15, found that 58 percent trusted the Democrats in Congress to do a better job handling the situation in Iraq, compared with 33 percent who trusted Bush. The president has taken advantage of Congresss spring recess to pound Democrats over their legislation, which would impose benchmarks for the Iraqi government to meet

“Flirty, you remember Mac, I think you used to play together when you were young”, mumWell I certainly remember him trying to play “hide the sausage”, while I crossed my legs so tightly that you couldn’t have fitted a slice of streaky bacon between them, let alone any other meat product.“Lovely to see you again Mac. (Bridget Jones never got this level of detail)Ideally I would like to have stayed talking to Mac but not really a lot you can say after that exchange and certainly wasn’t the time to swap numbers. By the time I eventually managed to escape Paul and the other 37 cousins, Mac was long gone. The whole way home in the car my parents spoke loudly to one another about what a wonderful boy Mac was and how he was making such a go of it back in Ireland.

A great quote from Robert Avrech’s post on Moussaoui’s sentencing: Many people are going to die because ZM is alive in our prison system. The innocent Americans will then be beheaded when ZM is not set free.I am afraid that America simply does not understand that we are at war with a genocidal theology. When I hear the phrase, We must bring these people to justice, I feel ill.We must make total war on these human monsters.Until Americans understand this simple fact, we lose. The Godol Hador is on a different subject, wondering why people believe in craziness.

Because it sure as heck won’t be Rocky. The results of a Dan Jones and Associates poll, commissioned by the Deseret Morning News and KSL-TV, showed that 39 percent of city residents say the mayor deserves to be re-elected, and another 57 percent think its time to give someone else a chance.” Of course, the same poll give him a 52% approval rating.Yet like Bush, he is a divider, not a uniter: “Only 4 percent of “strong Republicans,” for instance, said they would support a third term for the incumbent. But of the “strong Democrats” polled, 84 percent supported his re-election.” Similarly, “Andersons strongest supporters self-identify with Catholicism, Protestantism or no religion. Among members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Andersons approval ratings and support for re-election hover at 26 and 12 percent, respectively.”While the sample size of the sub-groups makes these numbers suspect, there is a vague grain of truth to them. Members of the city council think they have a shot at being mayor, so do county coucil members. I personally dont like Eric Jergensen my councilmember, because he never responded to my email. What kind of constituent service is that? I mean, how many emails do SLC councilmembers get anyway…well maybe the Aves get more than most. You know, all those prayer flags, end the war lawn signs, and drum circles add up.Meanwhile, Utahs other prominant Democrat, Rep. Jim Matheson is doing all he can to make a fuss and drag is feet to stall the testing of bombs out in the Nevada desert near Utah. This is one of those issues where Matheson doesnt have to look at poll or wonder about campaign contributions or GOP attack ads, because he doesnt care what anyone else thinks. This father died of cancer because the government lied to us about the same kind of testing. Its just that simple.link

Linda Doyle edits and publishes an excellent e-mail newsletter for Hillsdale’s Wilson High School. Called the Wilson Spotlight, it spotlights accomplishments in the school community. The current issue presents the inspiring graduation speech delivered by Wilson principal Sue Brent. The inspiration was two-fold. The speech itself was a call to success and commitment, but much of the inspiration came in Brent’s recounting the achievements of the graduating class. Here, edited for brevity, is what she said:Wilson families, visitors and graduates, thank you so much for coming to celebrate the successful completion of the class of 2007’s high school years.I’d like to share some numbers with you: 1, 642, 2292, 11295, 343, 300, 140, 108, 61, 18, 98, 10, 3000, 7,000, 73, 2,173 and 600. The numbers say something about what this class of 343 graduates have achieved. You spent approximately 2,292 days in school from Kindergarten through 12th grade. That’s 11,295 hours. You spent 642 days in high school, if you had perfect attendance. You have shown tremendous skill and talent as you exit this public high school’s doors. Here are some of the accomplishments of this class: 10 seniors in Student Leadership were given the Multnomah County Sheriff’s award for raising over ,000 this year to aid those less fortunate….Three hundred of you will go on to two and four year colleges. (Here she invited all the male graduating seniors to stand.) Now would just the five of you standing in the front row, stay standing. All the rest of you sit down. Those of you standing, represent the world’s white male college graduates and as such you are more affluent than 98 percent of the world; the gentlemen who sat down represent the rest of the world.I’d like to share the story of two young people, Mohammed Abdullah and Emily Norton, who sit here among you.Mohammed received the only Gates Millennium Scholarship awarded to a Portland Public Schools’ student. This means he will receive four years paid tuition to any institution he wishes to attend. It will also pay for his graduate school costs. Mohammed will attend Cornell University. He began high school at Benson, moved to Roosevelt and then transferred to Wilson in his senior year.I mention Mohammed because he, like the 73 Wilson scholars who contributed 7,000 service hours, exemplifies the gift of giving back. His service was to the community and youth organizations; helping young students pursue their dreams by supervising a laboratory, helping young students set goals, choose books and reach reading milestones at the public library, teaching and tutoring students in the Ethiopian community. His inspiration to succeed in science began in Africa, a continent debilitated by infectious diseases. When he first noticed that physicians in Ethiopia were performing a surgery without anesthesia, he became aware of the enormous medical challenges that the patients were facing. This first-hand experience of human suffering due to a lack of basic medical services has driven his decision to contribute by helping others. He wants to become a doctor.Emily Norton is one of 18 valedictorians and wants to pursue a career in International Relief Aid. She plans to attend Bucknell University. She is a Wilson Scholar whose service included constructing concrete floors for family homes in Oaxaca, Mexico with Northwest Medical Teams. As the Interact Club co-president, Emily has cooked dinners, served meals to the homeless, visited nursing home residents, and sold “Stop Genocide in Sudan” T-shirts to educate the community about the atrocities occurring in Sudan sending the proceeds to aid refugees.Emily received the Bank of America Student Award, given to only five students in the greater metropolitan Portland area for her leadership in community service activities. An immigrant to the US and a life-long citizen. These two graduates epitomize what we all wish for in the future, not only of America, but also of the globe, and the 21st century. We in America who have been given so much — so much — must decide what we will do with the gifts and resources we have been afforded. Instead of using them solely for ourselves, we all have to commit to dedicate those less fortunate than ourselves.I know that what you really care about in your heart of hearts is peace. Some of you planted 00 worth of marigolds to put that message out there. You see the situation in Afghanistan. You see the inferno in Iraq. You see the violence, the killing, the bloodshed, and, like me, you want it stopped. So while symbols are important because they remind us of the work to be done, symbols by themselves do not replace the hard work. And what is this hard work? A great religious leader said, “If you want peace, work for justice. In the Hebrew tradition, the word “shalom” doesn’t mean just the absence of war, it means, righteousness, well‑being, integrity, healing.Graduates, you have accomplished much. You have been given much. And much is expected of you. The world needs your gifts, your talents, your time and your love. Be generous with these. And so I close with the words of Jim Henson’s frog, Kermit at his commencement speech to the class of 1996 at Southampton Graduate Campus, “…you are no longer tadpoles. The time has come for you to drop your tails and leave this swamp. But I am sure that wherever I go as I travel around the world, I will find each and every one of you working your tails off to save other swamps and give those of us who live there a chance to survive. We love you for it. Enjoy life! And thank you very much.”Labels: 2007 graduating class, Linda Doyle, Sue Brent, Wilson High School, Wilson Spotlight

Alas, when he is 78 years old, disruptive changes in the business environment take place, his enterprise collapses, his family deserts him and he dies bankrupt and a broken hearted man.A survey published in The Guardian last year showed that an overwhelming majority of respondents preferred books with a happy ending. If you consider the years of misery that Rama went through, his long stint in the forests in pathetic conditions, the agonizing search for Sita and the final showdown, it will be reasonable to conclude that 75% of his lifetime was a washout, and he was happy for only 25% of his lifetime – But, why?The hero in Story A was happy for 10% of his life, whereas the hero in Story B was happy almost right through, say 98% of his lifetime.

I started off my three year old….yes you read that correctly….three year old….doing worksheets which I studiously made up for her. I was sceptical, but J4 was already two years ahead of herself, I was pregnant and very sick with number five so I decided to take six months off to see what would happen (and the worst case scenario was that she would only be one year “ahead” Within a month I had stopped recording – I had come across the concept and thought it meant that some kids would finish the textbook sooner than others!)J would spend a long time “playing around” This stopwatch hung around his neck for two years straight – he used it all the time to work out how long it took us to do the shopping, how long car trips were, how long sermons lasted, even how long it took to fill a vial of blood at the doctor’s!!! Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, seasons, leap years, twenty-four hour clock, digital, analogue. I am believing she will do it more quickly than if we had started at age five and spent half an hour a day for seven years “doing maths”! (If I am proved to be wrong, I will revise this!) (Update 2005: That was what I was thinking we’d do – now I’m wondering about using a remedial college text with the children in their mid-teens if they haven’t picked up anything more formal of their own volition before then)In the meantime we will continue with what we have come to enjoy…..We’ll play games like Rummy, Monopoly, snakes and ladders, chess, cards, battleships, dominoes, tiddly winks etcWe’ll plant and tend a garden – J and J just got to know halves….or thirds if Mama wanted to share, but Baby Number Seven will know eighths very early on!We’ll build things with lego and wooden blocksWe’ll count when we climb stairs with the nearly two-year-oldWe’ll keep a finance record (well, the older ones do)We’ll continue to do puzzles (J, J and K – Once there was purpose he picked it up very quickly – In fact, I am looking forward to adding examples to this piece about how God has taught them as individuals those things they need to know. Here’s the first example:J’s Flower Presses (by the way, this is not a maths lesson in real life, but a real life situation which used some maths along the way…and many other things too)J expressed the desire to press a ponga frond (having been pressing lavender and pansies in a tiny flower press). She then suggested he draw a life size plan – Then it was time to come inside – A valuable lesson was learnt when J rushed through cutting out one set of circles only to discover he had done a very poor job – K came and told me the score – Made mental note: watch news more closely and see what she’s talking about – J9 looked up from the writing he was doing to inform us all that he had seen those things at an Entomological Society meeting last year – He’s right – she was born when I was exactly 34 and a half – to the day!K8 thought a bit and said, “So she’ll be 18 months old in two months – So she’s sixteen months old today”At eight years of age, K may struggle to write numbers, but he can “do” “Five goes into 36…ooh let’s see, well seven times five is 35, so put 5 here…..seven fives are 35 so I write 35 down here, 36 minus 35 is one and you bring the zero down….five goes into ten twice, so I write 2 up the top…there, 72. As I positioned the protractor over the fairly small circle someone commented that it wouldn’t fit, and they watched with some interest to see how it could be used.No-one picked it up to have a turn, no-one was even particularly interested in my circle, but I’ll be looking out to see if anyone starts playing with protractors or division soon!September 2005J9 counted 110 buds on his feijoa trees.Of course he doesn’t need any practice in counting (he’s nine years old and a more than capable counter, understanding much larger numbers), but he certainly got practice – Six year old K suggested you’d have a better chance if the jar was half full – That’s nearly ,000 in ten years – In fact, temperatures have been a matter of great interest this winter – in fact, half an hour later he returned saying 22 is even eh He still talks about odd and even most days – with reference to his age. This interest has widened T2’s and M3’s vocabulary too – although, at two and three years of age, they have no idea what they’re talking about when the mimic L5’s odd and even discussions!Money Matters: J10 is keen on doing Su-Do-Kus and there is always one in the local paper. If you send it in you might win a prize:-) After sending a few away, I had him work out how much it would cost in a year to send one each week – But as for the rest of it…even though he was getting at least 98% each day, he was not enjoying it much at all.The difference between the two Js was remarkable – Plus she started a glossary in the back of her book of terms she wanted to remember.I slowly reached the conclusion that while J10 is CAPABLE, he is not yet interested in utilising a workbook approach and as I believe it is more important to foster his interest in numbers, than stifle it with repetitive bookwork, we changed tack. Instead of doing pages and pages of sums and then doing a test….we did the test first and then used the book to learn what they didn’t yet know, and we skipped the rest. All this with a view to dropping it entirely for J10 if his interest level doesn’t increase – certainly what we’ve been doing up to now has served us well, and J12 went for an extra year before she started the book so it won’t hurt him to wait.T2 (and a half) is just starting to get one-to-one correspondence beyond two items. He, however, wants to use it differently – I encouraged him not to overdo it and get sick of it, but he was keen to complete the bit he was working on.I started using Family Math with T2, M4, L6, K8, K9 – Although I don’t actually believe the kids need the book or special activities to learn maths, planning to use the book or some of the other manipulatives or games we have for a few minutes each day helps structure what I do together with the children.June 2007Ha that last entry is so funny.

I’m pretty sure that two of the new releases playing in town will be on my ten-best list come the new year (the secular new year — not Rosh Hashanah, although it might be amusing to do a Jewish ten-best list every fall). The first is one of the delayed openings from last fall’s New York Film Festival, Manoel de Oliveira’s delicious Bunuel hommage, Belle Toujours. Back in October this is what I wrote and I see no reason to take back a word:Of the handful of films I managed to see in the first two weeks of screenings for the New York Film Festival, Manoel de Oliveira’s latest offering, Belle Toujours, a sprightly sequel to Bunuel’s Belle de Jour, is by far the most satisfying. Besides, one should revisit Don Luis at every possible opportunity. It’s playing at the Lincoln Plaza (63rd and Broadway) in Manhattan. The other gem — and like the Oliveira, it’s a smallish film with a delightful witty edge — is the Romanian film 12:08, East of Bucharest, by Corneliu Porumboiu, currently at Film Forum.

Array sounds like they’re trying to make it a trend in france too.About the trip though: our first stop was london but we missed our plane there so we had to take the eurostar which goes through the chunnel. the prices are similar to dollar prices in the US, except the british pound is worth double the dollar. Germany is really pretty..and clean..but it kind of made me miss the dirty grittiness of paris which adds so much character. but i still managed to not look like a TOTAL mess in the picture above, taken in frankfurt.then we went to Strasbourg. it’s small and has an intricate system of canals which make the central part an island.I’ve linked the new albums that correspond to these cities and I also added three new pictures to paris album 2. the new pictures are at the end of page three in the album. I only put up the best of all the pictures i took.for now i’ll be working on my project for a week until my family comes to visit me.

I can’t help but think that we would have been better of without religion or at least a far more enlightened version. I am an agnostic, whether God exist or not is something I don’t think we will ever know. Besides God is a question of faith and wouldn’t proof of God be in itself a contradiction? Either way I feel that if God does exist then it will be in a way completely different than what is now believed. I would see Him as being a far more basic creature, far more tune with nature, perhaps being a fundamental part of nature itself. Or perhaps God is just a creature that has evolved far longer than we have. Think of how far we have come in the past few millennia, now think of a race that has millions of years of civilized development. Could they have evolved into a race of being so far in advance of ours that they would be godlike, or maybe a gestalt of a billion individual personalities combining in a form of scope and power beyond our understanding.

I’ve made loads of phone calls: to the solicitor to get a copy of Dad’s will and the title of the house, to Dad’s nursing home to explain to the family liaison officer what’s happening with Mum, to the palliative care people to refer Mum to them, to MEPACS – The GP said that constipation is going to become a problem because of the medication Mum is taking, so Coloxyl & Senna and Metamucil daily is non-negotiable. one is a slow release and the other is a quick release, so if she’s getting breakthrough pain take the quick release, and/or panamax. I have to keep a record of what pain killers Mum is taking as this will help to indicate whether the slow release medication has to be increased, ie if she’s taking a lot extra then she might need to have more of the slow release. Mum told me today that she has asked the Anglican minister who visited her in hospital to preside at her funeral, and she’s told Suzanne what music she wants.

Array-ne dueling polls only proving the irrelevance of national polls, cbs has awol ahead by a hair, but usatoady has kerry ahead by one point, while zogby has them tied. bush and kerry tied at 45 percent each, while a usa today/cnn/gallup survey gives kerry a 49-48 percent edge.usatoady: • nearly two of three voters call the economy only fair or poor. • kerry is preferred on almost every domestic issue over bush, with an edge of 29 points on the environment, 19 points on health care, 13 points on the federal budget deficit.

I have a plan to let you buy into the same health care senators and congressmen give themselves,” stated John Kerry in the second Bush-Kerry Presidential Debate on October 8, 2004. According to the brief, Kerry’s plan includes a proposal that would reduce the number of people who lack health insurance through a combination of expanded enrollment in the Medicaid and State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), new health insurance pools for small employers and individuals, and reinsurance at an estimated net cost of 53 billion over 10 years. The biggest piece of the Kerry plan is his proposed expansion of Medicaid, which, according to Antos, would put “a lot more money into a program that is essentially dysfunctional.” And Kerry says his plan will cover all children. Joseph Lemieux, of Centrists.org, called parts of Kerry’s plan “naïve.” He also classified Kerry’s plan as more of a “principle” than a “proposal” and said it had been drafted to please “Democratic partisans.” So the consensus seems to be that it will cost more than Kerry says, and cover less people than he promises.

-ne Last entry I told you how the Sox pitching staff is short a starter and that my thinking is the Sox will fill that opening via trade. That’s why I’m a firm believer in the White Sox strengthening their bullpen. The Sox bullpen was also the least worked pen in 2004, throwing 424.1 innings. Don’t expect this to happen again in 2005, although if their pitching staff is healthy, they should once again rank low in bullpen innings pitched. However, with another quality reliever (every indication is that the Sox are going to try and add another reliever) it means Ozzie will have one more guy that he can have faith in, which should increase the bullpen workload just a bit. This low IP is a nice stat because it tells you that the Sox starters are getting deep into games, but it also tells you that Ozzie Guillen has little faith in his bullpen and because of it the pitchers had to undergo more wear and tear then they should of. The flaw is even with the relievers fresh for most of the year, the Sox bullpen failed to be anything more then mediocre. Despite being last in innings pitched, the White Sox bullpen was 12th in homers allowed with 61 in 424.1 innings of work. The scary thing is, of all the teams that ranked ahead of the White Sox in homers, the closest team to throwing as few innings as the Sox was Detroit’s bullpen which threw 56 more innings. Sox closer Shingo Takatsu gave up 6 long balls in 62.1 innings while Jackson gave up 7 and Politte 6. Its obvious that the Sox, whose long ball numbers were inflated by pitching in a home-run park, need to put a focus on bringing in pitchers who don’t give up the long ball (DUH!!!).

Now, I had to meet my co-workers in our hotel lobby at 7:30am, so really I didn’t have much time to sleep as it was, especially with my newfound distraction. The movies were a little messed up (funny how they have mini screens at each seat that show the calculated time of arrival, altitude, speed, etc but they can’t successfully load their VCRs with the right movies).
